Total laboratory 36 hours. The Valley Chamber Chorale provides the opportunity for selected singers to perform outstanding choral music. Music literature of various historical periods will be sung. Instruction in techniques of singing, tone quality, musical style, diction, and musical interpretation appropriate to the music will be given. Not open to students with two credits in Music 51.(A)
P055—Beginning/Intermediate Guitar - 2 credits
Prerequisite: Each student must have a guitar.
Total lecture 36 hours, total laboratory 18 hours. A beginning or intermediate guitar course designed to impart basic techniques of guitar playing employed in a variety of styles, including, but not limited to, folk, pop, and classical. Some attention given to music for elementary school classrooms. Course covers the first position principal chords in the major keys of C, G, D, A, and E and relative minor keys of a, e, and d. In addition, several basic strumming and picking styles will be covered to give variety to choral accompaniment. A core of fundamental skills that can be integrated into virtually any style of play will be presented: first position sight-reading, basic scales, playing by ear. Particular emphasis will be given to expressing the student’s own musical abilities and interests via the guitar, including use of the guitar for accompaniment of the voice, duets, and solo guitar. P100—Fundamentals of Music - 3 credits
Prerequisite: None.
Total lecture 54 hours. Fundamentals of Music Theory will introduce students to concepts, nomenclature, and techniques that are considered prerequisite to a formal, college-level study of music theory, and is also recommended as a transfer-level, foundational course in music for non-music majors. This course covers the basic elements of music, including pitch and rhythm notation, scales, major and minor keys and key signatures, transpositions, intervals, chords, and an introduction to the keyboard. P101—Music Theory I - 4 credits
Prerequisite: Completion of Music P100 with grade of “C” or higher or instructor’s permission.
Total lecture 72 hours, total laboratory 18 hours. A study of the fundamentals of music including musical notation, intervals, scales, chord construction, ear training, sight singing, composition, and harmonic analysis. P102—Music Theory II - 4 credits
Prerequisite: Music P101 or instructor’s permission.
Total lecture 72 hours, total laboratory 18 hours. A continuation in the study of the fundamentals of music, Music P102 is a study of compositional techniques regarding chord usage and melodic construction, harmonies, musical form analysis, sight singing, musical dictation, and keyboard harmony. P103—Music Theory III - 3 credits
Prerequisite: Music P101 and P102 or instructor’s permission.
Total lecture 54 hours. A continuation of the study of music theory, Music P103 includes analysis of two- and three-part Renaissance polyphony, introductory Eighteenth-Century Counterpoint, elements of chromatic harmony, and forms in common usage through the end of the classical period (c. 1825). P104—Music Theory IV - 3 credits

Total lecture 54 hours. The final course in the lower-division music theory sequence, Music P104 continues to examine harmonic structures, including extended and chromatic harmony seen in music since the late 19th Century. P110—Exploring The World Through Music - 3 credits

Total lecture 54 hours. A survey of the dominant musical cultures of the world with comparisons to Western traditions. Course includes lectures, films, recordings, live presentations, and experimental techniques to explore how music is used around the world for aesthetic, inner awareness and social purposes. Total laboratory 54 hours. Elementary vocal training designed to assist the serious student of singing in the development of proper singing techniques. P116 – Handbell Choir - 1 credit
Prerequisite: None. The ability to read music is, however, an asset.
Total laboratory 54 hours per week plus 18 hours arranged. Designed for the novice or experienced ringer, Handbell Choir will rehearse and perform literature written and/or arranged for handbells. Previous experience is not necessary. Emphasis will be placed on proper ringing technique, sight-reading skills, articulation, ensemble, performance practice and care/maintenance of handbells. P117—College Chorale - 2 credits
Prerequisite: None. Vocal placement to be made during first week of class.
Total laboratory 90 hours plus 36 hours arranged. The chorale participates in major concerts, performs for school and community organizations and may tour during the spring semester. P120—Applied Music - 1 credit
Prerequisite: None.
Total lecture 18 hours. Individual musical instruction from private instructors approved by the college music department. Fees for lessons will be paid by the student. Credit will be awarded by the college staff following consultation with the private instructor. Each student will perform for the music staff at the conclusion of the semester to demonstrate achievements. An open laboratory offering students opportunities to develop additional skills in aural intervals, counting, enharmonics, key signatures, note names and types, terms, visual intervals, rhythm, scales, composition, music event manipulation and musical synthesis. Theory of chords and scales, including diminished, augmented and altered chords. Student is expected to perform studies and complete pieces of music. Total lecture 54 hours. A course intended for the advanced guitar student. It is assumed that the student has already learned fingerboard essentials, including bar chords to the twelfth position. The student must be proficient in notation and tablature reading. Chord comping, advanced theory or chords and scales, study of harmony and voice leading.
