1.  In-class teaching/counseling/support services

Organized Spring '08 class fieldtrips to Manzanar & Nixon Library (History 118)

Successfully taught three Summer '08 classes online from Mexico (History 117, 118, & 119)

Organized Fall '08 fieldtrip to Olvera Street in LA for Day of the Dead (History 108)

 

2.  Curriculum review/development

Researched and prepared new Liberal Arts major (including Social Science, Math/Science, and Humanities emphases) Spring 2008

Developed a new History class (including course outline, text, SLOs):  History 107 (California History)

Re-wrote Course Outlines for History 104 & 105

Continue to encourage and aid Social Science Division members to revise and submit updated course outlines

 

3.  Education Research Activity

A.  I attended a BC faculty development workshop presented by Dr. Mary Ellen on SLO assessment in Spring '08

B.  I attended a BC faculty development workshop on "Classroom Assessment Techniques" on Wednesday, August 20, 2008. 

C.  I continue to keep current with the profession through: 

    1.  my membership in the Organization of American Historians and reading its professional publications;

    2.  being on H-Net's Latin America (very busy) list serve of Latin American historians' current research, discussions of teaching techniques, conference reports, and book reviews;

    3.  being on UCLA's Latin American Center mailing list for announcements & presentations

 

4.  Community Work

I prepared and gave a multimedia presentation during Spring '08 "Spent Victory: The US & the Origins of the Cold War" as part of the CHAP 1940s program for '07-'08;

I prepared and gave a multimedia presentation during Fall '08 "Mexican Lives/American Dreams: Mexican Americans in the 1950s" as part of the CHAP 1950s program for '08-'09 and the start of Hispanic Heritage Month;

CHAP 1950s presentations for Spring '09 on "The Legacy of Brown vs. Board of Education" & "It Came From the Cold War: ."

 

6.  Recruitment of new student populations

Manned the Social Science Division table for most of the Fall 08 Senior Day (high school visitation) program.

 

7.  On-Campus Committee Work

Student Learning Outcomes Committee  (continuing from September '07 to present): 

    -    For most of Spring '08 this was mostly training and working to revise course outlines to meet WASC reevaluation deadline

    - Starting Fall '09, PC Student Learning Outcomes Coordinator/Committee Chair ('08-'09). 

    - As such, I introduced our Fall Flex Day's speaker, Dr. Mary Allen. 

    - Because of position, I now attend Faculty Senate & CLC (College Learning Council)

    - Organize bi-weekly meeting agendas, copy and distribute working materials

    - Consult on occasion with Curriculum Committee Chair & Acting VP for Instructional Services

    - Creating a new monthly newsletter: "Student Learning FOCUS" to inform and promote the campus community "dialoging" about SLOs

 

Curriculum Committee (continuing from Feb '07  to present as Social Science Division representative; unofficial SLO Committee representative):  Spring '08 and Fall '09 continued or recent heavy work load in reviewing the large number of course revisions where I have become the principal reviewer for SLO compliance;

10.  On-Campus Activities

Continuing support for and participation in some of the Anthro Club's activities

 

GOALS FOR YEARS 4.5-7

1.  Develop new History courses: (World History, History of Great Britain, change Latin American History into two semester classes:  Early Latin America & Latin America Since Independence);

2.  Develop a new online History class (History of the Middle East); as well as continue to adapt my existing online classes to focus on student learning success;

3.  Move the College forward in meeting our SLO timelimeContinue to actively participate in Curriculum & SLO (though not as PC Coordinator/Committee Chair after May 2009) committees;

4.  Continue to be actively involved in CHAP organization, meetings, and presentations ("Cold War Monsters"-Spring '09, "La Causa: Remembering Chicano Activism of the 1960s"-Fall '09, "JFK's Cold War: the Berlin & Cuba Crises"- Spring '10; "Chicano Spring-Remembering the Vietnam Moratorium of 1970"-Fall '09; "Nixon's Cold War"-Spring '11; etc.)

5.  Organize an on-campus "History Club" restoring the brownbag speakers lunch programs, introducing students to a wider range of cultural & historical resources through special evening programs and fieldtrips outside of the class environment.

6.  Participate in a NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) summer workshop.
