Do you teach math at a junior high school (grades 7 & 8) or high school (grades 9 through 12)? Ever notice how sometimes we do certain things for so long in a certain way that we forget why we do them that way? Like solving math problems. Ever have a student ask you "why" and been at a loss for words? If you feel like this and you want to remember why we do the things we do or would like to learn different ways to explain math to our students, why not take a summer course at Porterville College? We offer a pre-calculus class every summer and it is an excellent way to look at "old" math in new and sometimes more sophisticated ways! There aren't a whole lot of things that are new in a pre-calculus course if you have a good background in math (algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, and trigonometry). What a pre-calculus course does however is delve a little deeper into certain topics, revisits some details you may have forgotten or perhaps never thought about, and bridges the gaps between the prerequisite courses of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. There will be some new things and even some surprises to be sure but by and large pre-calculus is a fresh look at old material...you will love it! Make connections between old ways of looking at math and new ways...between the way you teach math now and the way you could teach tomorrow. See why we do the things we do and why they make sense in a broader picture! Take a look at the syllabus for MATH P102 Pre-Calculus Functions and Graphs and see if this is the right course for you. Contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to meeting you!
