Why your
faculty (including me) may NOT be able to email you right now: a
note from our college district's email guru:
Just a few quick
things for clarification.
First, due to the
problems we had last week with sending out the survey to
students, we are now blacklisted by several email
providers. I am working with email providers and trying to
get us removed from their blacklist. Gmail and Hotmail
should be fine now but Yahoo is still blocking us. I am
working with Yahoo trying to get us off of their blacklist.
If you have other email that is not getting to students,
please send me the email domain (examples: @live.com or @yahoo.com,
etc.) and I will do what I can to get email working to those
addresses again. Unfortunately, this is going to take a bit
of time so please bear with us. I will try to keep you
updated as we make progress on resolving our blacklist
problem.
Second, just to clear
up some confusion. I previously mentioned that students
could not see other students email addresses on the list
that was used. There is one exception to that, if students
replied to any of the messages sent to the list, then their
email address would have gone back to the list. I know
there were some students replying to those emails so those
students email addresses were seen by everyone on the list.
Finally, this is a
good opportunity to remind your students it is NOT a good
idea to reply to spam messages. Replying to a spam message
only indicates to the spammer that you are actively
monitoring your email which is gold to a spammer. The best
choice is to ignore and delete spam messages completely. In
this case, the test message which was sent out and the
survey were both legitimate but had they been real spam,
several students would have been responding to a spammer.
I hope this helps
clear things up. If you have questions, please respond to
me directly
tcoston@kccd.edu , keeping in mind that I am already
buried in questions (smile).
Thanks, Todd Coston

Music Performance:
Dear Porterville College
Community.
The Music P110 class,
Exploring the World Through Music, will be hosting
Old Time Fiddlers Hall of Fame recipient Mr. Del Baker (also
known as Fiddlin' Del) on Thursday evening in CA-2 starting
at 6 pm. Del will come with a few friends and we'll
be enjoying an evening of great traditional Country Music
and Old-time String Band tunes as well as some lively
discussion with this octogenarian gentleman. Del is a
Porterville resident and has been involved professionally
with the fiddling traditions of America for more than 75
years.
Please join us in CA-2 to
listen to and talk with this wonderful music. We'll listen
to music and talk about the growth and changes to the
tradition during his lifetime.
If you would like to offer
extra credit to your students for attendance, I will do what
I can to provide some extra credit tickets for them.
Hope to see you there!

I strongly recommend this
OP_ED article in the Washington Post.
While
many of the references Mr. Cohen makes are obscure history to most young
Americans, he is referring to the catastrophe of WWII and the
political/social movements that caused it. All of those
movements grew directly out of the Great Depression. The failure
to act on the current financial crisis in the House of Representatives
yesterday moves us one step closer to repeating the Great Depression.
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Several of you
seem to have looked into the turnitin.com extra credit opportunity
on the presidential debate but did not submit the 200 word essay.
Please realize that if there is no essay there on file, I can't
record it as extra credit. Double check to see if your essay
is actually there.
FYI: This is something of a
kickoff for a newly forming PC Alumni and Friends organization.
You're welcome to the event:

Here is an interesting
NY Times article
that talks about the possibility of
people who are displaced by foreclosure (lose their homes) also
losing their right to vote in this election because they forget to
re-register at their new address. I hope each eligible voter
among you is properly registered and that you will inform yourself
and go out to vote on November 4. I have forms in my office if
you need to register to vote or if you have moved since you
registered and need to change your address. Your registration
form must be submitted and received in the elections office before
October 20.
