Its been fun!  Microbiology is now being taught by Mrs. Shaunna Callison.

Objectives
The student will learn the history of microbiology.
The student will learn the chemical processes and anatomy of the bacterial cell.
The student will learn the classification of the microorganisms based on their
            diversity.
The student will compare and contrast the principal disease causing microorganisms,
their life cycle and method of prevention in humans

Course Methods
Students will be expected to take notes of the important facts and concepts presented
            during lecture.
Laboratory work will be done each class meeting and staining methods will be
developed resulting in the identification of unknown bacteria.
A lab quiz will be given on each lab at the end of the lab period.  It will cover the basic
concepts of the lab.  The labs will be collected at various times during the semester.
Be sure to keep you labs together in one place.

Grading
Seven tests are planned according to the content of the text.  Tests should relate
concepts learned in lecture and labs.  Questions will come from note memorization
and concept comparisons, end of chapter questions, lab questions and technique.
Part of your Ch.24-26 test will require Scantron form 886-E.
Part of your final exam will require Scantron form 882-ES.

pick the chapter, then interactive tutorials or animations.

No make-ups will be given.  One test will be thrown out.

Other
The timing of the lecture concepts and lab practice may not always correspond.
Some lab work may be required daily for 24 hour growth checks, or I may lecture
        during lab time.

Since these laboratories cannot always be duplicated due to the growing of bacterial
cultures, lab make-ups are not always feasible.  Labs will be worth 10 points each.
If you miss a lab, that is minus 10 points; if you miss one day of a two day lab that is
minus 5 points.  One cannot take a quiz on a missed lab.  Micro students are among the
hardest working, focused students at Porterville College, so this is normally not a problem.
One lab can be made up through an assignment I will give at a later date.

Expectations
All students will conduct themselves in a mature fashion that a course such as this
            demands.
It is a specialized course that requires many hours of memorization.
If such time is unavailable to you, please reconsider.

                                       Internet Assignments

                                     (to be scheduled in class)

1. Go to the desk in the general computer lab (AC-121) with a copy of your schedule to prove you are a student.
(Someone at a window in admissions and records will print out a copy of your schedule if you don’t have one.)
The desk has add slips already filled out for with an add form filled out for Information Systems PO90.
This is a no cost course. (Porterville College encourages the use of computer and its information
for students' classes.)  I will respond to your assignments.

2. You may use the lab in AC-121 or the library to review using your tutorial CD from your textbook.
Ask the librarian which computers would be best to use. (I have talked to them about Microbiology
students using the computers.) Remember your headphones!
