Miguel Angel Ruelas

Math P075 Basic Arithmetical Operations

Miguel Angel Ruelas was born in Los Angeles in 1969.  He is the older of twin boys.  He has eight brothers and four sisters.  His parents immigrated here in the 1950s to give their children better lives.

Miguel lived in Los Angeles until he was four years old when his family moved to Dinuba in 1973.

Like many who come to the US in search of a better life, Miguel's father and mother have only a few years of formal education and so worked in low-paying manual labor jobs.

Along with his brothers and sisters, Miguel has worked in the fields picking fruit, pruning and tying vines, stacking packed fruit boxes in packing houses, and loading diesels with refrigerated fruit to be delivered to every corner of the earth.

In 1988, Miguel graduated from Dinuba High School with honors and entered UCLA that fall with a major in astrophysics which he later changed to mathematics.  Miguel received his BS in math from UCLA in 1993.  He spent a year working at a property management company, then entered UC Santa Cruz in 1994 to earn a graduate degree in math. After four years, Miguel left UCSC with a MA in math and was hired full-time as a math instructor at Hartnell Community College in Salinas where he taught for three years.  He then applied to and was hired by Porterville College full-time as an Associate Professor of Math in 2001 and has taught there since.

Miguel is married and has a daughter.  He is happy to be back in the Valley giving back to the community that gave him so much.

Math is in everything we see.  It is a part of our world.  From the macroscopic size of a planet to the microscopic size of a virus.  Math predicts the position of electrons about their nuclei and describes how planets revolve about their stars.
