Planning your academic program

A “credit” – a working definition
The number of course credits are generally equal to the number of lecture hours per week a class meets. For example, a threecredit lecture class meets 3 hours per week. For each credit you take, you should plan around 2 hours of outside study per week. You should, therefore, manage your class and study time carefully – keeping in mind your employment and other personal responsibilities.

How many credits should I take each semester?

    • To be a full-time student - 12 or more
    • Financial Aid and Veterans benefits:
    • Full benefits - 12 credits
    • 3/4 Benefits - 9 credits
    • 1/2 Benefits - 6 credits
    • Athletic eligibility - 12 credits

What are the maximum credits I can take each term?
Nineteen (19). If you wish to take more than that, you need to get approval from a counselor.

    The College

Porterville College is committed to providing an educational process to enhance the personal worth and intellectual potential of its students and is also dedicated to producing graduates who are prepared for tomorrow's challenges. Statistics prove that Porterville College students who transfer to a four-year college earn grades that are equal to or better than those earned by students who go directly from high school to a fouryear institution. Our vocational graduates enter the work force with a degree or certificate that means quality training to area employers.
