Professor Emeritus of Art & Design, CSU-Fresno
Illustrating Magical California
Friday, September 29th, 2017
Porterville College Theater
Book signing to follow in Student Center
In this colorful slide show Doug Hansen will focus on the picture-making (illustrative) part of storytelling in his three California-centric children's books: Mother Goose in California, Aesop in California, and California, the Magic island. He will look at California through the lenses of fable, myth, and nursery rhymes, and share the stories behind his colorful artworks, discussing how his combination of subject, illustrative technique, and the artist/storyteller's point of view come together to create the feelings he wishes to project. He’ll share his artistic process from influences to conceptualizing, through research, design, and execution of his artworks in watercolor and gouache.
Says Mr. Hansen: “Picture books are a particular and demanding format. It's an advantage - and a challenge - for me to be both author and illustrator and I'll describe my writing process and how I find my balance between the writing and the images to tell my stories.
I promise it will be an entertaining presentation.”
Author and illustrator Doug Hansen was born in Fresno, California and is the eldest of six children in an artistic family. He was a newsroom artist at The Fresno Bee newspaper for 23 years. Hansen received both his BA and MA in Art from California State University, Fresno. He is a professor emeritus of illustration in the Department of Art and Design at Fresno State. Hansen lives and works in Clovis, CA.
Copies of Doug Hansen’s book are available for purchase in the PC Bookstore; the bookstore will open at the end of the talk as well.
