EVENT: Porterville College Art Exhibition: “Contemporary Quilts”
DATES OF SHOW: September 30 - October 24, 2019
RECEPTION FOR THE ARTISTS: Thursday, October 3rd, 5 – 7 pm
At the Porterville College Art Gallery
GALLERY HOURS: Monday – Thursday from 12 – 2 pm and 4 – 6 pm
The public is invited to see an exhibition of contemporary quilts by local artists. The exhibition runs from September 30 to October 24, 2019. The public is also invited to the reception which is for Thursday evening, October 3rd, from 5-7 pm.
These artists will be showing, through often non-traditional materials and methods, quilts that express their passion and their love for the quilting medium. As Laurie Britt says, “My textile work gradually evolved to combine my love of fabric with my original passion for drawing and painting. I have found it very liberating to realize that many of the creative effects possible on paper or canvas can easily transform cloth with a simple switch of medium and process.” Or as Beth Shaffer adds, ”Art quilting attracted me as I gradually realized that repeatedly constructing the same block for a traditionally patterned quilt was boring and its format limiting. Making an art quilt enables me to use my imagination and challenge myself by experimenting with various techniques, all while playing with beautiful materials.”
The artists in this exhibition display a broad range of subjects and a wide variety of approaches to the quilting medium. As Ellen Jordan says, “I have always been a creative person. Art of all kinds speaks to me. I see the world as a source of inspiration. I find patterns and designs in nature and man-made objects, which begin percolating in my brain until I have to turn them into something tangible: a card, a painting, a quilt.”
The show will run from September 30 to October 24, 2019. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 12 to 2 pm and 4 to 6 pm. The reception is Thursday evening, October 3rd, from 5-7 pm.
Parking is unrestricted during the time of the reception. For other times, contact the front desk when you arrive to visit the show for a free temporary parking permit.
