The public is invited to see the exhibition “Notes and Narratives: Collage works by Diran Lyons” at the Porterville College Art Gallery. The reception for the artist is Wednesday evening, November 13th, from 5-7 pm.
Notes and Narratives features Lyons' new series of collage works which pursues an interaction between appropriated Renaissance paintings, colloquial phrases, and the tumultuous US political landscape. Many of the works utilize tongue-in-cheek text to convey negative information about an individual in a seemingly innocuous manner. However, as with his remix videos, Lyons' collages ultimately draw upon remix strategies and digital tools to engage current events with a strong polemical voice.
Diran Lyons multidisciplinary art practice is heavily conceptual with exacting craft and edgy content. His political remix videos have been featured by The Atlantic, Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, Hardball with Chris Matthews, Huffington Post, MSNBC, CBS News, NY Magazine, TIME, Vanity Fair, and many other news publications. Examples of his remix work have been presented in national and international venues, including Cut Up at Museum of the Moving Image in New York, ROFLcon at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria.
Diran Lyons earned a BA in Sculpture and Painting at California State University, Fresno and an MFA in New Genres and Painting at University of California, Santa Barbara, where he was a Regents Fellow.
The show will run from November 6th to December 5th, 2019. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 12 to 2 pm and 4 to 6 pm. The reception is Wednesday evening, November 13th, from 5-7 pm.
