Porterville College

Registration now open for Saturday S.M.A.R.T. Academy

Registration is now open for the Porterville College S.M.A.R.T. (Science, Mathematics and Resource Technology) Academy taking place Oct. 11, 18 and Nov 1. Give your kids (grades 3rd-6th) the opportunity to get hooked onto the wonderful world of science and math.

This hands-on science class will show the fun side of chemistry, math, and biology. Your young scientist will have lots of fun working on hands-on experiments that are a great way to learn more about science.

The following Saturday sessions are available:

Session 1 - Oct. 11, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.- Kitchen Chemistry: Chemistry is about the materials in the world and how they change. Learn about the chemicals in your home and what they can do.

Session 2 - Oct. 18, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.- Discover the Secret of Life!: Examine your own cells and view the nucleus where DNA is found. Extract DNA from cells, collect it in a test tube and see it with your own eyes and touch it, if you dare! Discover how DNA makes all life similar, yet each of us unique.

Session 3 - Nov. 1, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Spy Kids, Your Country Needs You: Can you decipher an encrypted message we intercepted from the enemy? Learn how to use math to create a secret code for messages that others can’t read.

Please be sure that your young scientist wears comfortable clothing and shoes. All sessions will take place in the Porterville College Science and Math Lab.

Cost is $35 for all three sessions or $15 per session (includes t-shirt and materials). A reduction in registration fees is made available through the generous donation of the Edison International STEM Scholarship.

Space is limited. Registration packets are available in the PC Business Office, 100 E. College Avenue. For more information call (559) 791-2492.
