Spacks Prize goes to PC’s Catherine Hodges

Gunpowder Press announced Sept. 2 that Porterville College Language Arts Professor Catherine Hodges is the winner of the inaugural Barry Spacks Prize for Poetry. Hodges’s “Instead of Sadness” stood out among nine finalists.

Hodges stated that most of her poems investigate an image or an idea and tend to be more lyric than narrative. “Instead of Sadness” is a collection of poems that Hodges said relates to the “strangeness and wonder of being alive; about how brief our time is and about the piercingly mysterious companionship of beauty and sorrow.” The book will be printed by Gunpowder Press this year. The Barry Spacks Prize for Poetry is awarded on an annual basis. For more information please visit
