Upcoming C.H.A.P. talk celebrates power of the press

The Porterville College’s Cultural Historical Awareness Program (C.H.A.P.) will continue its spring schedule with the free, educational presentation “J’Accuse…!  Emile Zola, the Dreyfus Affair, and the Fragility of Truth” by PC Professor Jay Hargis. Enjoy one of two presentations; the first from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 30 and the second from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 1 in the PC Theater.

At the end of the 19th Century at a time of a national crisis of fear, anxiety, and culture war not unlike our own times, France tore itself apart over the Dreyfus Affair.  Wrongfully accused of treason by fraudulent evidence produced by the French army, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, an Alsatian Jew, was wrongfully convicted, and stripped of his military rank and shipped off to Devil’s Island, France’ most notorious prison.  Efforts to reopen the case and examine the evidence were suppressed until novelist Emile Zola published J’Accuse!” (I Accuse!) splashed across the front page of the newspaper L’Aurore. Zola accused the government, the army, and the courts of covering up the actual facts of Dreyfus’s innocence and of the promotion of antisemitism, then rampant in France.  This attack eventually led to recognizing the injustice, prejudice, and cover-up that were all parts of “L’ Affaire.”

The talks are free and open to the public. Look for more C.H.A.P. presentations coming up throughout the spring.

The Porterville College Cultural and Historical Awareness Program (CHAP) was organized in 2002 to enhance students' awareness of certain important aspects of our society to which they may previously have had little or no exposure. A theme is chosen by CHAP members each school year, and faculty members across the campus are encouraged to integrate elements of that theme into their coursework. Additionally, a variety of field trips, guest speakers, panel discussions and videos are presented throughout the year and are all open to the public.
