FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The public is invited to see an exhibition of contemporary quilts by local and regional artists. The exhibition runs from October 2 to October 25, 2017. The public is also invited to the reception which is for Thursday evening, October 5th, from 5-7 pm.
These artists will be showing, through often non-traditional materials and methods, quilts that communicate artistic concerns through the quilting medium. As Becky Haley says, “Why do people create art? All people from around the world create art to: seek personal enjoyment and satisfaction, express personal thoughts and feelings, and communicate with others. Quilt artists are no different.”
Some of the quilt artists in this show work in a range of different media as well as doing art quilts, such as Sue Marcotte, who won the Apple Festival t-shirt design in 1992, and who has done many murals for schools, friends, and family and is currently doing silk painting and acrylic painting as well as art quilts.
Charlotte Rogers, on the other hand, has immersed herself in just quilting at this point in her life. An avid student, Rogers has taken many classes from well-known quilters. As she says, "Why take one class when you'd learn so much more from 20?" Rogers’s enthusiasm for quilting led her to help organize the Common Threads Quilt Guild in Lemoore and to begin teaching classes. She continues to this day her teaching, mentoring, and quilting.
The show will run from October 2 to October 25, 2017. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 12 to 2 pm and 4 to 6 pm. The reception, which is hosted by Calico Mermaid and the Porterville College Art Department, is Thursday evening, October 5th, from 5-7 pm.
Parking is unrestricted during the time of the reception. For other times, contact the front desk when you arrive to visit the show for a free temporary parking permit.
