It is the Policy of the Kern Community College District to protect the members of the total college community and to protect the property of Porterville College. Under the general direction of the Director of Maintenance and Operations, reasonable protection is provided by using methods that fit within and contribute to the educational philosophy and process of the institution.
Porterville College has an understanding with the Porterville Police Department to request assistance for incidents that require resources not available to Porterville College. The College will summon the assistance of other agencies to provide services for incidents that require special resources.
Porterville College uses cadet student interns with training specific to parking and security. Parking and security officers are not peace officers. College Safety cadets are students enrolled in criminology classes and receive specialized training in campus police and safety operations.

Most campus buildings are open from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
Individuals who need to be in campus buildings or areas other than during regularly scheduled work hours must contact Maintenance and Operations (M&O).
Campus rooms and areas are protected by intrusion alarms. Before entering such areas, Maintenance and Operations must be called.
Campus buildings will normally be locked from 5:30 p.m. Friday to 7:30 a.m. Monday. College M&O personnel will unlock doors for weekend classes and other events as published in the Room Reservation Schedule.
It is the responsibility of those who use rooms, offices and areas to lock access doors, turn off lights, and close windows. M&O staff will check many of the areas of the campus during off hours but the primary responsibility for security lies with the user.
Keys are provided to individual staff members on a need-to-enter basis as determined by the appropriate supervisor. Lost keys must be reported immediately to one's supervisor and to the Maintenance & Operations Office.
Keys should never be loaned to other staff members or students. College personnel will confiscate any keys which have not been specifically issued to a particular individual. Duplication of college keys is a crime.
No property may be removed from the campus without expressed written permission from the appropriate supervisor. Unauthorized removal of District property from the campus is a violation of the law and may be prosecuted by the district.
The following statistics are presented to inform students of the incidence of various crimes on the campus and in the Porterville College vicinity.
Students are reminded that violent crimes have been practically non-existent on the Porterville College campus. However, the danger, threat, and possibility of these crimes is growing and should be a constant reminder that awareness of personal safety should be of primary concern.
The crimes noted do not discriminate days of the week or location. Some crimes were committed on the college property. However, they may have occurred in the vicinity of the college, or at a high school football game, at the swapmeet or at 2:00 a.m. in th morning. They may not have involved college students at all.
The numbers do represent the Porterville College area and the types of crimes committed. There are definite assumptions that can be made from the data.
There is a preponderance of incidents concerning the Porterville College parking lot. Burglary, petty theft, attempted and actual vehicle theft occur more often than any other crime. Consequently, students are cautioned to lock their cars, use anti-theft devices for cars and for stereo equipment. Do not leave valuables in sight on dashboards or car seats.
