High School Students "Go BIG" at Annual PC Math Battle

Math Battle

This past Monday, the Porterville College Mathematics Division held the annual Math Battle, an event that brings together high school students for a day of rigorous academic competition and community building. The competition is divided into two primary segments, beginning with an individual round where students test their skills against one another. This is followed by the high-intensity team round, where groups of four students from the same school collaborate to solve problems under strict time constraints. These timed challenges start at twelve minutes and decrease in duration until they reach the two-minute speed round, which organizers describe as a frenzy of activity.

Preparation for this event is taken as seriously as an athletic sport, with many teams holding weekly practices during lunch or after school starting as early as September. For students like Ezecue "Zeke" Leon, the experience is about more than just numbers; it is a way to feel more connected to the local community and find peers with similar interests.

Beyond the student experience, the Math Battle serves as a vital bridge between Porterville College faculty and local high school partners. This collaboration, which began years ago through a CSU Board of Regents grant, has allowed educators to form personal bonds that foster a more open and collaborative approach to academic curriculum.

The event concluded with a sense of immense pride as students walked away with medals and trophies, being rewarded for their academic dedication in a public forum. While the competition was fierce, the primary goal remains to show local students the great programs and welcoming environment available at PC for those who love mathematics and related fields.
