Reclaiming Joy

Michelle Miller-Galaz and Jackie Buttice represented Porterville College at the 2026 Strengthening Student Success Conference this week, sharing the college’s commitment to student belonging, creativity, and care.

Porterville College graduate Juan Orosco joined the conference’s student panel. Asked what brought him joy during his community college experience, Juan spoke about the support of the art faculty and the community he found at the college. He also reflected on the value of a college education for the next generation and how his educators encouraged him to pursue opportunities that helped him grow. With their support, he was able to take on creative projects, including mural work.

Michelle and Jackie presented a workshop titled “Beyond the Brush: Cultivating Student Success Through Collaborative Art and Courageous Care.” Their session explored how collaborative art and compassionate support can help students feel connected, recognize their strengths, and pursue their goals.

Juan’s reflections and the workshop showcased the importance of relationships, encouragement, and creative opportunities in the student experience. Together, their contributions brought Porterville College’s work in support of student success to a statewide audience.
