The Porterville College Art Gallery is turning up the heat this season with a dynamic and thought-provoking new ceramic exhibition titled "Fire Watcher", featuring the intricate works of artist and instructor Pasqual Arriaga.

For Arriaga, the ceramics studio has long served as a peaceful escape from the outside world. While the wheel-throwing process offers a deep sense of precision and meticulous control, the kiln introduces an entirely unpredictable element of transformation. Once glazed pieces are placed inside the high-fire environment, the outcome rests entirely in the hands of the elements—requiring symbolic offerings to the ancient "kiln gods" to ensure a successful firing without cracks or structural failures.

The exhibition bridges ancient history and modern artistry through a captivating series of handcrafted "Kiln God" sculptures built directly from recycled kiln parts and accompanied by unique offerings. Visitors can explore whimsical and symbolic details, including a COVID relief pack and a sculpted apple paying homage to these so called kiln gods, alongside a show-stopping interactive installation featuring the "god of rage and fire" with plumes of smoke flowing through its pipes.
