Continuing a Tradition of Inclusion

This past Wednesday, Porterville College once again celebrated the diversity and strength of our LGBTQ+ community by holding a ceremony to raise the Pride Flag on the campus.
The event was both a celebration of the LGBTQ+ Pride Flag and the community it represents. The flag-raising publicly demonstrates our pride and support for all LGBTQ+ members of the Porterville College community.
The event kicked off with opening remarks from PC Student Life and Leadership Program Manager, Jacob Sandoval. The original, iconic Pride flag was created by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. It originally had eight stripes, with each color carrying a specific meaning: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic/art, indigo for serenity, and violet for spirit. Though it's often seen today with six stripes, the flag remains a powerful, unifying symbol of visibility, pride, and solidarity for the entire LGBTQ+ community.
The event closed with the raising of the flag in front of the AC building. The flag will fly throughout the month of October in honor of LGBTQ+ History Month 🏳️🌈.
