What was once a somber reminder of loss has been transformed into a vibrant beacon of gratitude. In an incredible feat of community spirit and artistic dedication, the Porterville College Art Club has officially completed the new downtown mural at 23 E. Mill Avenue—finishing the massive project in just four days.

While most large-scale public art projects take weeks of planning and execution, the student-led team hit the ground running this past Monday. By turning the wall into what student artists described as a "giant paint-by-number" puzzle, the team was able to work with unprecedented speed.

“We got this done in 4 days, which is easier than we did our other mural,” noted Art Club member Ricky Carrillo. The efficiency was a result of a "happy medium" design that combined the aesthetic of comic book heroes with real-life first responders.

The mural’s location, situated in the rubble of the former Porter Theater, was chosen specifically to

honor those first responders who serve in Porterville and surrounding cities.

“When [the theater] burned down, that was obviously a really big moment for first responders to come in and help,” shared Art Club President Kallie Cordoba. The artwork features a policeman, a paramedic, and a firefighter, serving as a permanent "thank you" to the men and women who risk their lives for us every day.

This project was a true community effort, bridging the gap between the college and the city:

  • The City of Porterville: Provided enthusiastic approval and support through the Heritage Committee and City Council.
  • Parks and Recreation Department: Supplied the essential paints, supplies, safety cones, and even snacks to keep the artists fueled.
  • Local Support: The building's owner provided a lift and a generator, allowing students to reach the "tippy top" of their large mural.

This is only the beginning of our downtown "beautification" movement. With three more murals already approved by the City Council, the PC Art Club is eager to continue "brightening up Main Street".

As Fine Arts Faculty Jackie Buttice noted, the project has done more than just paint a wall—it has built a sense of belonging and community.
