Porterville College Wraps Up Inspiring First-Gen Celebration Week
11/06/26

The campus community paused this week to honor a driving force: our first-generation
college students, faculty, and staff. Held from November 2 through November 5, 2026,
First-Gen Celebration Week highlighted the incredible resilience, diverse lived experiences, and profound contributions
of individuals who are charting new territory as the first in their families to attend
college.
Why First-Gen Recognition Matters Across California
Across the state, higher education systems—including the California Community Colleges
Chancellor’s Office—champion first-generation student initiatives as a vital anchor
for equity and social mobility. With low tuition and a foundational mission of open
access, California’s community colleges serve as the primary engine for educational
and economic advancement for millions of students, a significant portion of whom are
first-generation.
Recognizing First-Gen Week is crucial because navigating higher education without
familial precedent presents unique systemic, financial, and cultural barriers. By
shining a light on these challenges and celebrating micro-successes, institutions
like Porterville College actively dismantle institutional obstacles, foster a deep
sense of belonging, and validate that our first-gen students are not just welcome—they
are essential to the future of our communities and California's workforce.
Looking Back at an Unforgettable Week of Events
True to the theme, "The First but Not the Last," this year’s lineup of campus activities brought students, faculty, and allies together
for connection, storytelling, and career preparation.
The celebration officially commenced on November 3 with the First-Gen Week Kick-off
Breakfast in the Quad, where students, faculty, and staff gathered to enjoy morning
meals and celebrate our campus trailblazers.
Mid-week on November 4, the SCCR hosted the powerful First-Gen Voices Open Mic event.
This welcoming platform gave first-generation students an opportunity to share personal
stories, poems, songs, and reflections about their educational journeys over provided
food.
Throughout the week from November 2 through November 5, the campus also featured special
spotlights highlighting faculty and staff who once navigated higher education as first-generation
college students themselves, proving that the path to a degree is entirely achievable.
The week wrapped up in the PC Quad on November 5 with a dynamic Clothing Closet and
Professional Headshots Pop-Up event. Teaming up with the Marketing Department, the
Basic Needs Center invited students to browse professional attire and receive complimentary
professional headshots to help them step confidently into their future careers.
Porterville College extends a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated, shared their stories, and supported our students all week long. As First-Gen Celebration
Week comes to a close, our commitment to uplifting, supporting, and empowering our
first-gen community remains ongoing every single day.
