Fueling Democracy on Campus: ASPC Hosts High-Energy "Ballot Bash"
10/22/26

Voter registration season is in full swing, and the Associated Students of Porterville
College (ASPC) are making sure students know that their voices matter—and that getting
registered can be both fun and easy.
This Wednesday at 11:00 AM, the Pirate's Cove was filled with hope as ASPC hosted
its "Ballot Bash." Designed to bridge the gap between civic curiosity and concrete
action, the event drew a crowd of students looking to grab a bite to eat, pick up
vital election resources, and, most importantly, secure their place to vote in the
upcoming election.
For the event, the Pirate's Cove was transformed into a hub of civic engagement, offering free food, music, and a welcoming environment where students could ask questions about the voting process without intimidation. Representatives from ASPC were on hand with laptops and registration materials, giving students the direct means to register to vote on the spot.
For many college students, navigating registration deadlines, polling locations, and
ballot measures can feel overwhelming. By bringing the resources directly to campus,
ASPC successfully removed the administrative barriers that often deter first-time
or busy student voters.
Why Student Votes Matter
Elections are decided by those who show up, and historically, young adults and college students have faced lower turnout rates compared to other demographics. This trend, however, creates a critical misallocation of influence. When students fail to vote, policies regarding higher education funding, student loan reforms, minimum wage, local housing, and public transit are shaped entirely by demographics with vastly different priorities.

When students exercise their right to vote, they shift the political landscape. Higher
education institutions thrive when student advocacy is backed by electoral power.
Elected officials pay attention to districts with high youth turnout; policies begin
to reflect the needs of working learners, parents balancing classes and jobs, and
young adults entering the workforce.
Your vote is your direct leverage over the issues that impact your daily life—from the cost of textbooks and local rent
controls to reproductive rights, environmental regulations, and job market opportunities.
