Students Shine at Annual State FFA Leadership Conference

Porterville College was well-represented at the 98th Annual California State FFA Leadership Conference and Expo, held from March 21 to 24 in Ontario, California. Three PC students—Trinity Bem, Makayla Garcia, and Juliana Paredes—traveled to the Ontario Convention Center with PC Ag professor Michael Leishman to showcase the unique educational opportunities available through the Porterville College Agriculture Department.
The conference, which carried the theme of celebrating student growth and leadership, brought together over 8,000 FFA members, advisors, and guests from across the state. Our students spent their time actively engaging with approximately 6,000 high school students, sharing their firsthand experiences and highlighting how Porterville College serves as a premier destination for those looking to pursue a career in the agricultural industry.
At the College & Career Expo, the Porterville College booth stood out with creative and interactive pirate-themed activities. Attendees were invited to dress in pirate gear for photos taken by our student representatives and received custom pirate buttons as keepsakes. This imaginative approach was a major hit, drawing large crowds and providing a memorable way to reinforce PC's strong sense of community and identity.
Beyond the expo floor, the conference offered a wealth of inspiration, featuring keynote speakers such as world-renowned animal scientist Dr. Temple Grandin and adventurer Amelia Rose Earhart. For our student ambassadors, the event was more than just a recruitment trip; it was a chance to connect with the next generation of agricultural leaders in a meaningful way.
By the end of the four-day event, Trinity, Makayla, and Juliana had successfully promoted our agriculture programs and demonstrated the professionalism and pride that define that BIG Porterville College spirit. Their efforts helped ensure that high school students from every corner of California left Ontario with a clear understanding of the vibrant community and academic excellence awaiting them at Porterville College.
