Continuing PC’s Tradition of Inclusion

This past Thursday morning, Porterville College once again celebrated the diversity, resilience, and strength of our LGBTQ+ community by holding a powerful ceremony to raise the Pride Flag on campus.
The event was both a celebration of the LGBTQ+ Pride Flag and the vibrant community it represents. For students, the flag-raising publicly demonstrates our collective pride, safety, and unwavering support for all LGBTQ+ members of the Porterville College family.
The event kicked off with opening remarks from PC Student Life and Leadership Program Manager, Jacob Sandoval. The original, iconic Pride flag was created by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. It originally had eight stripes, with each color carrying a specific meaning: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic/art, indigo for serenity, and violet for spirit. Though it's often seen today with six stripes, the flag remains a powerful, unifying symbol of visibility, pride, and solidarity for the entire LGBTQ+ community.

As we raised the flag, we also stepped into the roots of LGBTQ+ History Month, which is nationally observed throughout October. Established in 1994 by Rodney Wilson, a high school history teacher, this month-long observance was created to encourage honesty and open conversations about queer history, civil rights milestones, and the monumental contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals to society. For college students, recognizing this history is a vital reminder that the rights and freedoms we enjoy today were built on the courage of activists, artists, educators, and everyday people who demanded equity and visibility.

On a college campus like Porterville College, inclusion is much more than a word—it is the heartbeat of student success. When students see themselves reflected in campus traditions, student leadership, and institutional events, they feel a deeper sense of belonging. Research consistently shows that when students feel safe, valued, and affirmed for who they are, they are more engaged, more likely to persist in their studies, and better equipped to thrive academically and personally.
The event closed with the proud raising of the flag in front of the AC building. The flag will fly throughout the month of October in honor of LGBTQ+ History Month—serving as a beacon of acceptance, a reminder of our ongoing journey toward true equity, and a welcoming promise to every student that you belong here at Porterville College.
