Campus Community Comes Together for Hispanic Heritage Month Lotería Celebration

The Porterville College Student Center Conference Room (SCCR) was filled with energy, laughter, and friendly competition on Tuesday as Student Life hosted a special Lotería event in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Often referred to as Mexican bingo, Lotería is a traditional game of chance with deep cultural roots across Mexico and Latin America. Instead of numbered balls and plain cards, players use colorful illustrated boards (tablas) featuring iconic cultural imagery—ranging from characters like El Catrín to elements of folklore, nature, and daily life. As a caller (cantor) draws cards and recites playful riddles or verses corresponding to each image, participants mark their boards using dried pinto beans, coins, or tokens. The first person to complete a designated pattern and shout "¡Lotería!" claims victory.
The afternoon brought an outstanding turnout, welcoming students, faculty, and staff alike to take a break from their daily schedules, connect, and celebrate cultural traditions together. Attendees enjoyed great food while gathering around shared tables, listening closely for each call, and marking their boards in spirited rounds of play.
Seeing students compete side-by-side with instructors and campus staff made the event a true highlight of this semester’s Hispanic Heritage Month festivities. Thank you to everyone who joined in to play, share a meal, and make the gathering such a lively success!
