Poem in your Pocket Day

The Porterville College Language Arts Department and the PC Literacy Innovation Center successfully hosted their annual Poem in Your Pocket Day Open Mic this past Thursday between the library and LRC, celebrating National Poetry Month and the simple pleasures of poetry.

Throughout the day, the quad resonated with the voices of students, faculty, and staff sharing their love for verse. A microphone was set up just outside the library. Individuals stepped forward to share their original creations and cherished favorite poems.

For those who arrived without a poem in their pocket, a well-stocked table offered a delightful array of poems to choose from, ready to be tucked away and enjoyed whenever.

The event closely echoed the spirit of National Poem in Your Pocket Day, which began in 2002 in New York and has grown into a nationwide celebration supported by the Academy of American Poets (AAP). As highlighted on their websites (https://poets.org/national-poetry-month/poem-your-pocket-day and https://poets.org/national-poetry-month), the AAP continues to champion this essential art form year-round.

It was amazing to see the turnout and the enthusiasm for poetry that filled the quad. It was a wonderful day of shared words and appreciation for the power and beauty of poetry.
