The Space In Between: Experimental Journeys from North Fork to Porterville
The Porterville College Art Gallery is proud to present The Space In Between: Experimental Journeys from North Fork to Porterville, a unique installation by Dawn Hart. The exhibition runs from November 4th to December 5th, 2024, with an opening reception on November 14th from 5 to 7 pm.
Dawn Hart, a local artist and faculty member at Clovis Community College, brings her exploration of liminal spaces to Porterville College. Her project, The Space In Between, is a culmination of journeys taken between her studio in North Fork and Porterville College. Unlike conventional trips focused solely on destinations, Hart’s explorations emphasize the routes and spaces often overlooked. Her practice involved collecting objects, documenting scenes, and transcribing observations during her travels, creating a comprehensive map of the “in-between.”
Photography plays a significant role in this installation, as Hart has captured hundreds of images along her journeys. These photographs, which wrap around the gallery space, offer a layered depiction of her experiences with the landscape of the Central Valley, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the varied terrain and ephemeral beauty of these transitory spaces.
The Space In Between is not merely about reaching a destination but examining the richness of spaces encountered along the way. Hart’s installation invites viewers to contemplate what it means to truly inhabit the space between two points. Her process—gathering, documenting, and synthesizing her discoveries—serves as a metaphor for understanding the transient, often ignored aspects of our environments. Through collections of data, artifacts, and visual documentation, Hart raises questions about the essence of these spaces and the insights they may reveal.
Dawn Hart’s work challenges us to reflect on our relationship with spaces typically seen only in passing. Her exhibit encourages us to consider: What do these collected objects and observations say about the spaces we often overlook? Do they transform in meaning when removed from their natural context?
