Writer and Poet Speaker Series

The PC Writer and Poet Speaker Series is a co-curricular engagement initiative at Porterville College, developed in collaboration with the Language Arts Division to enhance literacy, critical thinking, and cultural awareness among students. The series invites contemporary writers, poets, and interdisciplinary scholars to share their work and engage students in discussions that bridge classroom learning with lived experience.
Each spring, the program culminates in our National Poetry Month celebration, featuring two signature events:
  • “Poem in Your Pocket” Day, where students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to carry and share short poems throughout campus, and
  • The Poetry Garden, an interactive outdoor exhibit that transforms a visible campus space into a reflective installation of student-written and published poetry.
These events not only cultivate a love of language and creative expression but also strengthen connections between academic disciplines and student identity. The series supports Title V goals by enriching academic engagement, promoting foundational literacy skills, and building inclusive spaces for student voice and storytelling.
