Mission

At Porterville College, our mission through the Caring Campus Initiative is to foster a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment where every student, staff, and faculty member feels valued and connected. We are committed to creating a culture of care that encourages personal and academic growth, professional development, and meaningful relationships.

Vision

By embracing empathy, respect, and collaboration, we aim to inspire our students to succeed both inside and outside the classroom, ensuring they are equipped with the skills and confidence to thrive in a diverse and evolving world. Faculty and staff play a pivotal role in this mission by engaging in positive, intentional interactions that promote student success and a sense of belonging, reinforcing our shared commitment to a compassionate and responsive campus community.

What is Caring Campus?

The Caring Campus Initiative is a nationwide program developed by the Institute for Evidence-Based Change (IEBC) to enhance student retention and success in community colleges by fostering a culture of care and connectedness. Grounded in research indicating that students who feel welcomed and supported are more likely to persist and achieve their academic goals, the initiative engages both faculty and nonacademic staff in adopting intentional behaviors that promote student engagement and belonging.

Caring Campus 5 Behaviors: In-Person & Virtual

The Institute for Evidence-Based Change (IEBC) created Caring Campus based on research that shows students who feel more connected to their college are more likely to be retained, persist from semester to semester, and complete their academic goals. The Caring Campus initiative seeks to increase student success and feelings of campus belonging through staff-led, student-centered practices, known as “the five behavioral commitments.”
