Presentation Description: Starting with the origins of Islam in 7th century Arabia, Dr. Oliver will trace the journey of the Qur'an as a text and a guide for Muslims as it spread across the Atlantic ocean. Beginning with Columbus' voyage, through the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and up to the present day, Dr. Oliver will trace how the Muslims and the Qur'an have long been present in the American experience.

Presenter: Dr. Martyn Oliver, American University.

Bio: Dr. Oliver is the Faculty Chair of the American University Core Curriculum and member of the Department of Critical Race, Gender, and Culture Studies. Previously the director of Arab World Studies and Religious Studies at AU, he earned his PhD from Boston University. His studies have taken him to Lebanon, Morocco, Vienna, Turkey, and Israel/Palestine. A native of rural Southern Minnesota, Dr. Oliver's work examines the stories we tell about religions, both our own and those of others. He is the author of the Great Courses lecture series "Introduction to the Qur'an."
