Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about BIT

1. What is BIT?

BIT stands for Behavioral Intervention Team. The Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) at Porterville College is a collective of mental health therapists and faculty who assess and respond to student behavior that may indicate a safety risk, mental health concern, or need for support.

2. Who can make a BIT referral?

Anyone, including faculty, staff, students, or community members can make a referral if they’re concerned about a student.

3. What kinds of behavior should I report?

Some examples include:

  • Sudden drop in grades or attendance
  • Depression or extreme anxiety
  • Substance abuse
  • Odd or erratic behavior
  • Suicidal thoughts or self-harm

If you’re unsure whether to report—it’s better to report and let BIT assess the situation.

4. Is the referral confidential?

Yes. Your identity is kept confidential to the extent possible. BIT focuses on safety and support, not punishment.

5. Will the student know I made the report?

No, the BIT team does not disclose who made the referral unless it's essential.

6. What happens after I submit a referral?

  • BIT reviews the report.
  • They may contact you for more details.
  • They gather more info and may contact the student.
  • Follow-up support or intervention is offered to the student.

7. Is BIT disciplinary?

BIT is primarily a support and early intervention team, not a disciplinary body. However, if a student’s behavior violates college policy or presents a serious threat to safety, BIT may refer the case to the Standards of Student Conduct Board or Campus Security, and disciplinary action could follow. The goal of BIT is to help students before things reach a crisis or conduct issue, but in some cases, both support and discipline may be necessary to ensure campus safety.

8. What if it's an emergency?

If someone is in immediate danger or needs urgent help, call 911 or campus security first. Then you can submit a BIT referral after.

9. How do I make a referral?

Usually through an online referral form on the Student Health and Wellness Home page on Porterville College’s website.
