Early Alert Information for Faculty

The Early Alert program is designed to assist students who are facing personal or academic difficulties in the classroom by providing immediate counseling and advising services. Instructional faculty refer students to the Early Alert Staff, creating an institutional effort to help the student succeed.


How do I refer students to the Early Alert Staff?

What is the difference between an Early Alert and a BIT referral?

Early Alert Referral Reasons:

  • Missing Assignments
  • Low Test/Quiz Performance
  • Refer to other Support Services
  • Study Skills
  • Absences


BIT Referral Reasons:

  • Marked Change in Academic Levels
  • Social Withdrawal/Depression
  • Alcohol/Drug Use
  • Bizarre or out of the ordinary behavior
  • Threats of Violence or Intimidation

What happens after I refer students to Early Alert?

The Early Alert Advisor makes the first contact with the student to address the areas of concern indicated on the referral and to provide on and off-campus resources. If recommended by the advisor, a follow-up appointment is scheduled with the Early Alert Counselor for further counseling services. The immediate counseling services provides an opportunity to build rapport with the students which creates a positive support system.

When students feel connected, valued, and engaged at their institution, they are more likely to succeed. Porterville College is committed to help students reach their highest potential by providing services such as the Early Alert program.

How are students notified?

Students are notified by phone, email and/or text messages. Students may also self-refer by scheduling an Early Alert appointment at the Counseling Center.
