Cal Grant Student Guide
Get to know California's Cal Grant program, what you may qualify for, and the steps to receive your award at Porterville College.
General Cal Grant eligibility
Cal Grants help eligible students pay for college. The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) determines your award type using your financial aid application, the applicable GPA requirements, financial need, and the college you attend.
Key eligibility requirements generally include:
- Meet California residency requirements or qualify through the applicable AB 540 nonresident tuition exemption provisions.
- Meet citizenship or eligible noncitizen requirements, or qualify for state aid through the California Dream Act.
- Enroll at least half time in an eligible undergraduate degree or certificate program at a qualifying California college.
- Have financial need and meet the annual income and asset ceilings.
- Meet the GPA requirement for your award pathway, when one applies.
- Generally, not already hold a bachelor's or professional degree.
- Meet applicable requirements concerning student loan default and grant repayment obligations.
- Maintain the college's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards and have remaining Cal Grant eligibility.
Not sure whether you qualify? Apply and ask for help. Different award pathways and exceptions may apply to your circumstances.

Types of Cal Grant
You do not choose an award by filling out a separate application for each type. CSAC considers you for the appropriate Cal Grant based on your information and the applicable award pathway.
Cal Grant A
Primarily tuition and fee support
Helps with tuition at eligible colleges and universities. While you attend a community college, a standard Cal Grant A award is generally held in reserve for transfer. Eligible students with dependent children or foster youth status may qualify for an access award while attending community college.
For the high school entitlement pathway, the usual minimum high school GPA is 3.00. Other pathways have different requirements.
Cal Grant B
Help with everyday college costs
Provides an access award for expenses such as books, transportation, and living costs. At a qualifying four-year institution, it can also provide tuition support, generally after the first year.
For the high school entitlement pathway, the usual minimum high school GPA is 2.00. Eligibility depends on the applicable award pathway.
Cal Grant C
Support for career and technical training
Helps eligible students in occupational or technical programs with books, tools, equipment, and other qualifying costs. No GPA is required for Cal Grant C. Program eligibility and award selection requirements still apply.
Ask Financial Aid to confirm that your specific Porterville program qualifies.

Student parents and foster youth
Your family circumstances or foster care history may qualify you for a larger Cal Grant award.
Students with dependent children
If you support a child under age 18 and provide more than half of the child's financial support, you may qualify for an increased award. Parent or legal guardian requirements and CSAC certification rules apply.
Eligible recipients may receive an annual access award of up to $6,000 for Cal Grant A or B, or up to $4,000 for Cal Grant C, at full-time enrollment.
Complete the required dependent-child certification in WebGrants 4 Students and respond to any follow-up request. These figures are total award maximums for the applicable component, not an extra amount added to the standard access or books-and-supplies award.
Current and former foster youth
Eligible foster youth may qualify for annual access awards up to $6,000 for Cal Grant A or B, or $4,000 for Cal Grant C, at full-time enrollment. CSAC applies foster care verification, age, and other program requirements.
Review your foster youth status with CSAC and Financial Aid. Cal Grant foster youth benefits and the California Chafee Grant are separate programs, with different requirements. Some foster youth may also qualify for extended Cal Grant eligibility.
Review access award requirements
Enrollment, financial need, remaining eligibility, and program rules may reduce the amount you receive. Qualifying as both a student parent and foster youth does not double the increased award.
How to apply
-
Submit the right financial aid application
Complete the application for the academic year you will attend and include Porterville College.
FAFSA
For students eligible to apply for federal student aid, including U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens.
California Dream Act Application
For eligible students applying for California state aid through the Dream Act. CSAC also provides guidance for mixed-status families.
Complete all required signatures and contributor sections. The FAFSA is a federal application; the CADAA is administered by CSAC. If you are unsure which to use, review CSAC's application guide or contact Financial Aid before submitting.
-
Confirm that CSAC has your GPA
For Cal Grant A and B consideration, confirm that the appropriate school has submitted your verified GPA by the applicable deadline. Cal Grant C does not require a GPA.
-
Follow up in both student accounts
Use WebGrants 4 Students for your CSAC award status, school of attendance, and required confirmations. Use insidePC for Porterville's document requests and financial aid information.
An award shown by CSAC does not by itself mean that a payment is ready. Complete the college's review steps, too.
GPA submission and your responsibilities
Your GPA must be calculated and certified under CSAC's rules. The appropriate GPA can depend on your completed coursework and award pathway.
Ask the right school
If you are in high school or recently graduated, ask your high school about its submission. If you have college coursework, ask Financial Aid which college GPA or other record is appropriate for your application.
Verify the record
Check WebGrants 4 Students to see whether your GPA has matched. If it is missing or incorrect, contact the submitting school promptly, ideally before the deadline.
What if my school cannot submit electronically?
Ask about CSAC's GPA Verification Form and any other permitted option for your situation. Follow the current form's certification and submission instructions. Sending a transcript alone does not replace a required certified GPA submission.
Which information should I check?
Make sure your name, date of birth, graduation information, and other required identifying information are accurate and consistent across your school and financial aid application records. CADAA applicants should check the applicable non-SSN matching information.
Use the college's approved process to correct records or provide sensitive documents. Ask Financial Aid for help if you cannot confirm a successful GPA match.

Application cycles and deadlines
The dates below apply to 2026–27. Application and GPA requirements vary by award pathway.
State priority deadline
March 2, 2026 Deadline passed
Priority consideration for state aid, including the applicable Cal Grant entitlement, competitive, and Cal Grant C pathways.
Community college deadline
September 2, 2026 Deadline passed
September 2, 2026, is an additional Cal Grant application deadline for eligible California community college students under applicable CSAC award pathways. Not all Cal Grant programs or applicants qualify for this deadline. Students should review the requirements for their specific award pathway.
Missed a deadline? Contact Financial Aid. Ask whether any late-submission or appeal option applies and what other aid may still be available. Do not assume a later FAFSA deadline extends a Cal Grant deadline.
How the Cal Grant award pathways differ
- High School Entitlement: for eligible current high school seniors and recent graduates.
- Community College Entitlement: a separate pathway for eligible California community college students. Do not assume you must be a recent high school graduate to be considered.
- Transfer Entitlement: for eligible students transferring from a California community college to a qualifying four-year institution. GPA, timing, age, and residency conditions apply.
- Competitive awards: limited awards for eligible students who do not receive an entitlement award.
- Cal Grant C: a separate selection process for qualifying career and technical programs.
CSAC determines which pathway applies. Review the current requirements before making an enrollment or transfer decision.
Check CSAC dates for your application year
Required documents and award review
CSAC's offer is a starting point. Porterville must review the requirements that apply to your award before payment can be made.
- Check your college record. Sign in to insidePC and review your financial aid information for the correct award year.
- Respond to requests. Submit the documents needed for your eligibility review, such as verification information, residency or AB 540 documentation, or information needed to resolve a discrepancy. Your requirements depend on your application and circumstances.
- Review your award and status. Check for outstanding requirements, SAP issues, and updates to your aid offer. Contact Financial Aid if a CSAC award does not appear in your college record.
Porterville's instructions for checking your status
Income and asset ceilings
CSAC publishes annual financial limits. The applicable limits depend on factors such as award type, dependency status, and family size. Review the 2026–27 limits for your award year, rather than a prior-year chart.
Find current income and asset limits
Your cost of attendance
Your college budget, financial need, and other aid can affect how much Cal Grant you receive. If your educational expenses or financial circumstances have changed, ask Financial Aid about a review and any documentation needed.
Disbursement and enrollment
A disbursement is a payment of your financial aid. Your award offer and your payment can differ because of enrollment, remaining need, eligibility review, or changes to your record.
| Eligible units | Enrollment level | Share of full-time term award |
|---|---|---|
| 12 or more | Full time | 100% |
| 9 to fewer than 12 | Three-quarter time | 75% |
| 6 to fewer than 9 | Half time | 50% |
| Fewer than 6 | Less than half time | Generally not payable |
These are general enrollment categories, not a payment guarantee. Financial Aid determines the eligible enrollment and payment for your situation.
When will my Cal Grant be paid?
Check your award status and current payment instructions through Porterville Financial Aid. Ask the office for the Cal Grant payment date that applies to your term and whether anything is still needed in your file.
A CSAC offer date, a federal aid payment date, or the date of another student's payment does not establish your Cal Grant payment date.
What if I add, drop, or take a late-start class?
Contact Financial Aid before changing your schedule. Ask how the college's Cal Grant enrollment review date, class start dates, attendance, and any later adjustments affect your award. Waitlisted classes are not the same as enrolled classes.
If you withdraw or receive funds for which you were not eligible, your award may change and a repayment may be required. Ask about both your current payment and future SAP eligibility.
Can I receive a payment for an earlier term or for summer?
Ask Financial Aid to review your specific term, attendance, remaining eligibility, and applicable deadlines. Summer eligibility and payments for earlier terms require a separate review; they should not be assumed from a fall or spring award.
How do I receive access or books and supplies funds?
Ask Financial Aid about your payment options, any authorization to apply funds to college charges, and how to request payment of eligible access or books-and-supplies funds directly to you. Follow the current college instructions for receiving your funds.
Cal Grant award amounts
These annual maximums show the Cal Grant access or books-and-supplies support available at a California community college for full-time study. Your actual award may be lower.
| Award | Standard award | Eligible student parent or foster youth |
|---|---|---|
| Cal Grant A | Generally held in reserve* | Up to $6,000 |
| Cal Grant B | Up to $1,648 | Up to $6,000 |
| Cal Grant C | Up to $1,094 | Up to $4,000 |
*The standard Cal Grant A tuition award is generally reserved while attending a community college. The increased awards shown are total component maximums. They are not added to the standard amounts. Enrollment and other eligibility requirements apply.
Amount reference: California Legislative Analyst's Office, July 2026. Confirm your individual award with CSAC and Financial Aid.
Student Success Completion Grant
The Student Success Completion Grant (SSCG) is a separate state program that can provide additional support to eligible Cal Grant B and C recipients at California community colleges.
- 12–14.99 units: Up to $1,298 per semester
- 15 or more units: Up to $4,000 per semester
You must meet the applicable Cal Grant payment, enrollment, SAP, and unmet-need requirements. Awards depend on available funds.
Foster youth or receiving disability accommodations? Special SSCG award amounts or enrollment rules may apply. Ask Financial Aid and, when applicable, the Disability Resource Center to review your eligibility.
SSCG has its own eligibility rules. Do not assume every Cal Grant rule or enrollment threshold works the same way for this additional grant.

New awards, renewals, and transfer
Receiving a new award
In WebGrants 4 Students, confirm the college you will attend and complete any required high school graduation confirmation or other award tasks. Check insidePC for the college's requirements. Your award type and grade level must accurately reflect your record.
Renewing your Cal Grant
Submit a FAFSA or CADAA every year. Continue to meet financial, enrollment, SAP, and other eligibility requirements, and monitor your remaining eligibility in WebGrants 4 Students. A prior award does not guarantee renewal or payment.
Transferring, taking time off, or holding an award in reserve
Review your remaining Cal Grant eligibility with Financial Aid before transfer or a break in attendance. Ask CSAC whether a leave of absence or reserve provision applies, how long it can last, and what steps are required. Do not stop payments or request a leave solely because another student did so.
Update your school of attendance when you transfer. Cal Grant payments used at community college can affect the eligibility available later.
Grade level and planning for completion
Your certified college grade level and remaining award eligibility can affect your award. If CSAC's record seems incorrect, ask Financial Aid to review your completed coursework and grade-level certification.
Cal Grant A and B generally provide up to four years of full-time equivalent eligibility; program-specific exceptions can apply. Cal Grant C generally supports up to two years. Discuss your individual limit with CSAC.
For a typical 120-semester-unit bachelor's degree, completing an average of 30 applicable units per academic year, often 15 each semester, supports a four-year completion plan. Work with a counselor on a course load and education plan that fit your goals and circumstances.
